Those at FJ Gritsch strike a seamless balance between the pride of place, centuries-old tradition, and modern technology. This single vineyard Gruner Veltliner is alive with scents of lemon peel, citrus fruit, coriander, apple and nut. It was fermented in stainless steel and aged on the lees, imparting a round mouthfeel. It is an aromatic, elegant wine with a throughline of concentrated fruits and minerality. On the palate, you can detect flavours of ripe red and green apples, pure lime, green pepper and fine, spicy minerality. The finish is long and tart. Gruner Veltliner from along the Danube’s banks are famed for their ageing ability, and this one is no exception. Keep it for up to 10 years. Serve it slightly chilled, alongside tangy Asian dishes, or traditional Viennese food, with plenty of sweet pork.
