Gruner Veltliner Singerriedel Smaragd 2022 (FJ Gritsch)

Cellar for up to 20 years. Decanting is optional, up to an hour before serving. For almost two hundred years, the Gritsch family have been making wine in the centre of Spitz, Wachau. This tradition is now carried into the 21st century by Franz-Josef - an only child, representing the seventh generation of Gritsch wine-makers. FJ Gritsch’s headquarters is the Mauritiushof, a 13th-century building formerly used żeby wine-making monks. From this charming location, visitors can catch a glimpse of the Singerriedel, one of the most awe-inspiring vineyards in Wachau. It is a mighty green fist, rising above both the Danube and the small town of Spitz, to an elevation of almost 330 metres. Gruner Veltliner is typically grown at the foot of the hill, where the soil is at its deepest. This single-vineyard wine opens with a refined bouquet of subtle citrus, pepper, flower pollen, and something reminiscent of a stony babbling brook, alive with mint plants. This Gruner is an elegant wine, slowly revealing itself with each sip. On the palate, you can discover a wiry acidity, delicate tropical fruit, orange peel, minerality, white pepper and careful hints of mango. It is a classy wine, striking a beautiful balance between power and sophistication. Think about enjoying it alone, or alongside a tender lamb or veal cutlet.
